日本を代表する美人とされるのに、平安時代の歌人小野小町がいる。
その小町の七つの逸話に因んで、〝七小町〟という。

鸚鵡小町はその一つで、年老いた小町が大内へ参上した時、女房たちが彼女のあまり変りように、歌を詠んで、その返歌で小町であるか、どうかを試そうということになった。

そこで和歌を送った処、小町は鸚鵡返しに和歌を返したという逸話から鸚鵡小町がつけられた。

本図は、この鸚鵡小町になぞらえた作画であるが、小娘に、細紐でびんをあげた年増が何事か非難されている構図は、先の逸話のどの部分を現代化したのか、はっきりしない。

歌麿描く女性たちは、盛期の豊満な顔立ちに比べて細面となり、またびんに比べてまげが大きく結髪されたヘアスタイルとなっており、享和年間（1801-04）の作画であることを知る。
しかし年増の立膝した足の曲線美や胸の前で交互した両腕の描写の見事さは、盛期の歌麿の優秀さをなお留めているといえよう。

This print was produced during the Kyowa Wra（1801-1804）.
The expression of a seated middle-aged woman is excellent in the way it brings out the beauty of the curved line of her legs and of the lines of her arms which are crossed in front of her chest, showing his technique to be still as strong as it was during his most productive period.

This piece was a product of Utamaro's late period. It is one of a series of seven prints that parody incidents in the life of the famors pocetess Komachi.
